WHAT IS “MASKNE” ?

With the corona outbreak, the use of face masks increased and so did it’s demand. Everyone wearing different forms of face masks are now leaving their homes for work, studying and even for recreational purposes. Seems that face masks are here to stay for a longer time than the virus itself.

The frequent use of face masks has given birth to another issue: maskne. The word is a combination of two words “mask” and “acne”. And as the name suggests, maskne is the acne induced due to frequent use of face masks. The condition causes pimples, redness, or irritation around your mouth, cheeks, and jawline , due to the bacterial growth on the face. The face covered all day has no direct exposure to air at all and the bacteria gets trapped and is clogged inside the skin pores.

Elizabeth Mullans, M.D., A dermatologist at Uptown Dermatology in Houston, Texas , Elizabeth Mullans mentions that ” Maskne occurs when sweat, skin oils, and bacteria are trapped on the skin while wearing your mask”. She also added that ” Face masks can cause irritation by either physically rubbing against the skin, which can damage the skin’s protective barrier, or by trapping moisture, which can cause acne.”

This type of acne is known as “acne mechanica” that includes any skin complications due to too much friction, rubbing or pressure on the skin.

Here is what you can do to avoid face mask acne:

Wash your face, every day: Wash your face regularly every day so that you can get rid of sweat, dirt and harmful bacteria that can cause pimples and rashes on your skin.

Moisturize your skin: As winters are here now so you have to be extra careful with your skin in general. Apply moisturizers on skin whenever you feel your skin is dry and scaly.

Avoid makeup: Regular use of makeup can hurt your face as well. Avoid applying too heavy makeup. Apply simple sunblock or a moisturizer of your own choice with lip tint, both on cheeks and lips.

Wash your mask after every use: Its better to keep yourself protected from bacterial skin infections and in order to do that, make sure you wash your face masks after every use.

Exfoliation: Consider a gentle exfoliation face wash that contains anti bacterial ingredients. This will reduce all the bacteria on your face. Use a hydration cream afterwards to lock the moisture inside the skin pores.
